Design

  • The probe is a tapered, rodlike instrument calibrated in millimetres, with a blunt, rounded tip
  • One end is The World Health Organisation probe, having millimetre markings and a small, round ball at the tip. The other end has the University of North Carolina (UNC) 15-probe
  • WHO probe has a 15mm long probe marked at each millimetre and colour-coded at the 5th, 10th, and 15th millimetres
  • UNC probe has a 0.5mm ball at the tip and markings at 3.5, 8.5, and 11.5 mm and colour coding from 3.5 to 5.5mm
  • The instrument has a sleek handle design

Description

  • When measuring a pocket, the probe is inserted with firm, gentle pressure to the bottom of the pocket.
  • The shank should be aligned with the long axis of the tooth surface to be probed.
